Strauss Aluminium Flying Airship. The whole history of this particular toy maker is interesting in itself. The Ferdinand Strauss Company was an American company, founded in the early 1900s, based in New York that made inexpensive toys, including wind-up mechanical toys, out of tin. Strauss would be known as "The Founder of the Mechanical Toy Industry in America" and this piece is one example of his fantastic toys. Interestingly enough in 1912, Ferdinand Strauss hired future toy magnate Louis Marx who became another huge player in the toy industry. Anyway back to this piece well at the time Zeppelins were big and not just in size but media exposure and were a source of wonderment around the world. This toy was all part of this wonderment and could be hung up and the propellor wound to make it spin. For some collectors an addition of an original box is everything for us however it sometimes adds greatly to the overall display piece. Whether in a cabinet or hanging above a desk this makes a cool addition to any room.
